High Duration Activities

Unique Configuration

Set what qualifies as a “High Duration” activity.

  • Duration Threshold Type: This will inform what type of threshold you would like to set.
    • Fixed Value - A straight day for day  comparison
    • Percentage of Project Remaining - If there are 100 calendar days left in your schedule, and you set the Duration Threshold to 15, then any activity with a duration over 15 will be flagged here.

While high-duration activities are a common aspect of many projects, they present unique challenges related to schedule flexibility, resource allocation, risk management, and quality control. Project managers should carefully plan, monitor, and manage such activities to ensure they do not become bottlenecks or sources of significant project delays. Additionally, open and clear communication with stakeholders is essential to manage expectations and ensure that the project's timeline is understood and accepted.

  • Reduced Schedule Flexibility: High-duration activities can limit the flexibility of the project schedule. If a significant portion of the project consists of long activities, the schedule may become less adaptable to changes, delays, or disruptions.
  • Increased Risk: Longer activities often pose a higher risk to the project schedule. Any delays in these activities can have a more significant impact on the overall project timeline. Proper risk assessment and mitigation strategies are crucial when dealing with high-duration tasks.
  • Resource Allocation Challenges: Long-duration activities may require continuous allocation of resources over an extended period, which can strain resource availability. It's essential to manage resources effectively and ensure they are available throughout the duration of these tasks.
  • Complexity and Monitoring: Managing and monitoring long activities can be more complex, as there is a need for sustained focus over an extended period. Detailed tracking, milestone checkpoints, and regular communication are essential to ensure the progress of these tasks.
  • Quality Control: Extended activities can be challenging to manage in terms of quality control and maintaining the standards expected by the project. Consistent oversight and quality assurance measures are essential to ensure that long tasks meet project requirements.
  • Risk of Delay Cascade: Delays in high-duration activities can lead to a cascade effect, impacting dependent tasks and potentially pushing the entire project behind schedule. Proper contingency planning and proactive risk management are necessary to address this risk.
  • Increased Costs: Longer activities may involve increased costs, including labor, materials, and overhead expenses. It's important to budget for and manage these expenses properly.
